New Patients Welcome!
Carbal welcomes all patients who identify as either Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and their families.
When you come in for the first time, remember to bring your Medicare card as Carbal provides bulk-billing across all services.
Check in with our friendly team at the clinic reception desk and you will be asked to fill out a form that will ask important questions including:
- Whether you identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander;
- Medicare card details;
- Personal contact details;
- Emergency contact details; and
- Allergies and other general health information.
Why is this Important for our First Australian Patients?
As an AMS, we want to ensure that we’re delivering the best possible care and access to services that are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
There is a significant inequality between the health of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, and one of the ways we aim to help reduce that inequality is to conduct more regular or earlier screening for certain conditions, like chronic diseases, that we know disproportionately affect First Australian people.
We know that our mob require important immunisations at different stages in life, and we want to ensure that we are providing these immunisations in a timely manner in order to provide the best possible preventive health care. Aboriginal and/or Torres strait Islander patients are also eligible for certain programs and initiatives, such as the ‘Close the Gap’ pharmaceutical program, which will assist with reducing medication expenses to a low cost or even free, if they are a holder of a health care card.
Eligible patients will be given the option to see one of our friendly Aboriginal Health Workers (AHW’s) before their GP appointment. This is optional but is very beneficial in providing you with a more thorough health check during your visit.
Aboriginal Health Workers
Our Aboriginal Health Workers are here to provide you with a brief non-invasive overall health check, that could include taking your blood pressure, checking your heart, breathing and oxygen levels and more.
They are also there to help in giving advice about any other general health and wellbeing concerns or questions you might have.
