New Directions:
Carbal’s Mums & Bubs Program
Supporting Mothers and Families During the Journey of Their Pregnancy
Commencing in 2008, Carbal’s Child and Maternal Health Program, ‘New Directions’, is all about giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and their babies better access to pre-natal and post-natal care. This includes the provision of standardised, consistent information about child and infant care in addition to practical advice and assistance with breastfeeding, nutrition and parenting.
The program also monitors children’s developmental milestones and immunisation status to ensure that any deviations from the norm are identified and addressed early. Health checks and referrals for treatment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children before starting school are also performed.Â
Primarily located at Carbal’s Russell Street clinic, New Directions is comprised of dedicated Midwives and Aboriginal Health Workers who work tirelessly to improve the health outcomes for pregnant mothers, babies, children, and families. The Aboriginal Health Worker works closely with the Midwife to provide our clients with culturally appropriate maternity and infant care and support.
Service provision includes group programs, clinic support and home visits to provide a flexible service to meet our clients’ needs. Over the past years, many mums have participated via antenatal and postnatal home visits and referred clients to the clinic and other service providers as required. Mothers and children can attend Koala Club which is held in both Toowoomba and Warwick.Â
The team work closely with the Toowoomba Hospital’s Women’s Health Unit as part of an ongoing collaboration to provide a seamless service to our mob. The hospital bags provided to our mums for their hospital stay can help alleviate some of the stress involved with this important time.
Program Includes:
- Antenatal and Postnatal care and education
- Home and centre visits
- Breastfeeding support and education
- Parenting advice and support
- Nutrition and healthy eating information
- Immunisation information
- Women’s Health information
- Referrals to other Carbal Outreach Health Support Services
