Good Health Starts
With a 715 Health Check
What is a 715 Health Check?
A 715 Health Check refers to the item number on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) which allows for all Indigenous people to be eligible for an annual assessment consultation with their general practitioner or Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW).
During the consult, patients can ask their doctors about anything at all that relates to their physical or mental health or that they may be concerned about.
After the health check, the doctor can refer a patient to up to 10 free follow-up services with professional healthcare specialists, if needed.
These healthcare services can include:
- Counselling services
- Allied Health professionals (eg: a physiotherapist, dietitians)
- Specialised services that work towards the prevention of any potential chronic conditions (eg: a diebetes educator, eye specialists, etc.)
Who Can Have a 715 Health Check?
Anyone who identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person and has a current Medicare card is eligible to receive a free health check each year.
What Does a 715 Involve?
A 715 health check will generally take up to an hour and in some cases may involve that the patient see a doctor, nurse or other health worker during the same appointment.
Depending on the patient’s age and personal circumstances different tests may be carried out and some of these include:
- a general health assessment including a review of weight, height, immunisations and physical abilty;
- checking blood pressure;
- checking blood sugar levels;
- ordering a blood test;
- requesting a urine test;
- discussing the health of the patient’s family members;
- talking about the patient’s health priorities and goals;
- do other tests, as needed (eg: eyesight and hearing).
