The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Young Parents Support Program is funded by Queensland Health. It provides holistic support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people (both female and male) during the antenatal, birthing, postnatal and early parenting period. Some of the strategies used are:
– Facilitating access to the health system and health education
– Addressing social factors such as access to adequate housing, financial security , alcohol tobacco and drug issues, domestic violence and parenting issues.
– Encouraging school attendance or re-engagement with the education system
– Building on strengths within young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities and generational learning with elders to enhance life and parenting skills.
